Button Bar Techniques
Wednesday, June 1, 2016 - 10:50am
Button Bar Techniques! By David J. Weiner Button bars, for me, are the single most useful new feature introduced in FileMaker 14 (aside from the Script Workspace, which is a beautiful thing). Interestingly, the reason I find them so useful has nothing to do with their primary intended use case: the navigation bar. Sure, a simple and neatly-aligned navbar is great to have, and being able to switch segments from a regular button to a popover and back again is truly useful for speed of UI design, but the killer feature of button bars is the calculated label. This feature alone is, as they say... + continue reading

Aptitude for Apps
Wednesday, March 16, 2016 - 3:20pm
The countdown has begun! FileMaker announced today that the 21st annual Developer's Conference, or DevCon as it's affectionately known, will be held July 18-21 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. This is the largest gathering of FileMaker developers in the world, with 1,500 of our closest friends gathering in one place to geek out about FileMaker. This year is shaping up to be rather exciting, as the theme is "Aptitude for Apps" - focusing on creating and enhancing the capabilities of creating custom apps for the desktop, iOS and the web. Attendees will get the first peek at... + continue reading

Our FIleMaker monthly Meetup group met this last Wednesday in a new space! It was beautiful and the conference room was enormous - with a convenient wireless presentation system for laptops to present on a giant projection screen. Our many thanks goes out to Ken Skeen and the fine folks at Hanna Andersson that graciously offered their space for our meeting, to Gerald Chang of Eight2 for providing drinks and Chris Irvine of ThreeProng.com for bringing the pizza and co-hosting the meeting! Our topic was: FileMaker Alternative Modal Dialogue Showcase. The idea was to show alternative methods... + continue reading

By Thomas Meglasson III   I don't know PHP, and my HTML and CSS skills are rudimentary at best. Nevertheless, I recently became a web developer! Fortunately, with FileMaker's WebDirect, I don't need those skills to make a beautiful website. I build it all right in FileMaker, using skills I already have, and then publish straight to the web with a FileMaker Server. I was recently tasked with creating a conference registration system for a large association's annual convention. They expect around 900 to 1,000 registrants this year. The system had capture the... + continue reading

Today we are excited to release our second module for FileMaker developers: fmRecentRecords. It's an easy-to-deploy module for FileMaker that gives you a simple way to add a history to the dashboard or menu screen that your users will appreciate. The idea behind it is to make it trivial for a user to get back to what they were working on from the home screen by presenting a list of the records they recently viewed. The assumption here is that your user is probably going to be visiting a small set of records on a regular basis -- at least in the short term. Automatically keeping those... + continue reading

Excel to FileMaker
Monday, November 2, 2015 - 12:00pm
Have you ever uttered the phrase, "These Excel spreadsheets are turning into monsters!", or perhaps you've heard, "Excel is the place where data goes to die"? At MSN Media, we often hear this complaint - or variations of this - from our clients. Today we asked our Senior Developer, David Weiner, to recount one of his favorite Excel to FileMaker success stories. This is his story. Excel to FileMaker - A Success Story One of my favorite clients, an animation company, came to us using several spreadsheets to keep track of hundreds of digital assets with notes... + continue reading

Automatically Perform Script on Server By David Weiner The ability of FileMaker Pro 13 and 14 to perform a script on the server instead of locally on the client's machine is a huge potential boon for productivity. Tasks for which a user might otherwise have to wait to complete can be accomplished in the background without holding them up. Performing certain scripted tasks on the server is also much, much faster in many cases. So, it's nice to perform a script on the server whenever you can. Of course, you can't use "Perform Script on Server" (PSoS) if you don't... + continue reading
